Hanson School District

On Wednesday, January 24, the Hanson senior class traveled to Pierre to visit the State Capitol. Mr. Tate Schoenfelder incorporated this trip into his senior government class to gain valuable experience relating to politics, forensics, and government.

To start the day, the seniors explored the South Dakota Attorney General’s office. The students were able to meet the attorney general, Marty Jackley. He informed the class on various components of his job including what he does and what he handles. Throughout the tour of the building, the students were able to meet many other employees that worked in the office. Each person provided valuable information to the students that related to the specific department they work in. One section of the office included the forensics lab. The students were able to see and learn about all the activity that goes on in the forensics lab. Included in the attorney general’s office is the training of law enforcement officers. Students were able to see parts of the building such as the dormitories and the shooting range. Students recognized a local Hanson County community member and Hanson graduate, Matt Huber, who is currently in training.

The remainder of the day took place at the State Capitol. While there, Jessica Bahmuller, District 19 representative, provided insight on the role she plays as a South Dakota representative.

The students were able to tour the capitol while seeing many important figures that are involved in South Dakota’s government. Before leaving the Capitol, the students had the opportunity to experience South Dakota’s House of Representatives going into session.
Overall, the trip to Pierre allowed the Hanson government class to get firsthand experience of how the government works, especially in South Dakota.
